LOCATION AND GETTING THERE
Located in the extreme South of Mozambique, just 10km north of the South African border post of Kosi Bay, Planet Scuba overlooks the picturesque beach town of Ponta do Ouro (GPS co-ordinates 26° 50’ 29” S, 32° 53’ 12” E).
The Kosi Bay border post is some 630km from Johannesburg and 460km from Durban. While the South Africa roads are generally good, some stretches (such as between Piet Retief and Pongola) can delay you for quite some time, and the Kosi Bay border post opens at 08h00 and closes at 17h00 sharp, so plan carefully to give yourself sufficient time for your journey.
It’s also a good idea to fill up at Manguzi (the last town before the border post, also known as KwaNgwanase), because although there is a petrol station in Ponta do Ouro, you don’t want to risk using contaminated fuel. Manguzi is also a good place to stock up on last-minute supplies, as well as to re-inflate your tyres on your return journey if travelling in a 4x4.
The route through the sand dunes from the Kosi Bay border post can only be travelled by 4x4. If you don’t have one, contact us prior to your trip to arrange a transfer from the border to Planet Scuba, and leave your car at the parking lot on the South African side of the border. The parking lot is privately owned and secure, and costs approximately R30 per day, payable on departure.
Remember to bring your passport (South Africans and citizens of certain other southern African countries do not require a visa), and copies of the registration papers of your vehicle as well as your boat/trailer/jet-ski/quad bike etc.
Ponta do Ouro falls in a Malaria area. The use of Malaria prophylaxis is a personal choice. Much effort is made at Planet Scuba to keep mosquitos at bay and electronic mosquito machines are installed in all rooms.
